Start with what you enjoy
You do not need a busy calendar or a big group activity. Think about the places, people and interests you would like to reconnect with, or something new you would like to try. A support worker can help you plan and take part in an agreed activity while respecting what you want to do yourself.
- Visit a café, library, community garden or local market
- Enjoy a short walk or time at an accessible park
- Attend a hobby group, craft session or community event
- Shop for ingredients and plan a meal
- Keep in touch with friends or family in person
Make the first outing manageable
Choose one activity, allow time for travel and leave room for a break. If unfamiliar places feel overwhelming, start somewhere familiar or choose a quieter time of day. You can agree on a shorter visit and build up gradually if that suits you.
Tell the provider about communication preferences, mobility and access needs, sensory preferences and any agreed support or safety plans. Discuss what would help you feel comfortable and how you will let the worker know if you want to change plans.
Agree on transport before the day
Check how you will get there and home, who is organising transport and whether the worker will accompany you throughout the activity. Share any requirements for mobility aids, accessible entry, parking or assistance getting in and out of a vehicle.
In regional areas, travel can take a substantial part of the visit. Confirm the pickup time, expected journey length and return time so the outing does not feel rushed.
Check the full cost
Ask for a written explanation of the support charge, travel time, kilometre costs and any minimum visit or cancellation terms. Also check who pays for tickets, food, entry fees and any worker expenses before booking an activity.
If you intend to use funded support, confirm the proposed service and any activity or transport expenses with your relevant funding contact before agreeing. Do not assume every outing expense is covered.
A simple checklist for your first outing
Before the visit, agree on these details with the provider:
- What you want to do and what support you would like
- Pickup location, start time and return time
- Transport, accessibility and any planned breaks
- The charges and who pays each activity expense
- What to bring, such as a hat, water or mobility aid
- Who to contact if plans change or the activity is cancelled
Review what worked for you
Afterwards, think about what you enjoyed, whether the pace felt right and what you would change. You might keep the same outing, try a different time or explore another interest. Your preferences should guide the next visit.
